Wastewater
Treatment & Biotechnology in the 21st Century
Achievements made in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) technology during the last two decades of the 20th century were instrumental in preserving the world's environment. Biological treatment, effluent filtration, and effluent disinfection are just some of the examples that have reduced many of the environmental impacts of chemical pollution in our waterways and have protected the world's aquatic ecosystem. These achievements were made while advances in industrial and commercial productivity were experienced and large populations expansions were taking place. Biological technology kept stride with development making these advancements some of the greatest of the 20th century. Still in spite of all these advances there are many more challenges ahead that have not yet been met. Challenges facing the WWT industry in the 21st century can only be overcome by advancing the principles and practices of sound economic and environmental technology. The industry must utilize its resources as efficiently as possible, minimizing chemical pollution while striving to make advances in environmental engineering that will improve the world's quality of life.
